Completed projects
The following projects have been taken up and completed so far:
- A pilot bio-gas plant has been erected to show the students how the technology works. The school is in the process of erecting a bio-digester for treatment of kitchen and garden waste.
- Pre-heating the feed water that is input to the laundry boiler through installation of a solar water heater. This has brought the input temperature into the boiler up to around 65-70ยบ centigrade, resulting in considerable savings in diesel. The laundry serves the needs of around 400 children who live in the school dormitory.
- The bath water supplied to the girls dormitory is heated with solar water heaters, obviating the need for electric powered water heaters.
- Avenue lighting of main pathways and corridors using solar power. The school has used a direct system with battery back up, without converting DC to AC, thereby saving itself the cost of the inverter etc. The resulting system is very cost-effective, and the school proposes to extend it to other locations.
- The school has created a large rainwater harvesting pond with a capacity of one million liters. This helps to conserve rainwater through an extensive rainwater conservation system throughout the school. The system utilizes running water on the ground as well as all the rooftop run off.
- Harvesting of rainwater on the campus. A system of rainwater drains and inbuilt rainwater harvesting chambers has been built this year as part of the on-going expansion of facilities in the school. The storage reservoir has a capacity of 1 million liters, and is currently full, owing to the monsoon rains that have been falling.
- Soil reclamation and remediation is done by worm composting and organic-composting. The benefits of the compost are realized through green patches that are used to grow vegetables for the kitchen.
- Re-use of materials like glass and paper is encouraged on the campus. regularly. The Tool Room endeavors to make the campus self-reliant in the field of building and repair works, as well as it imparts hands-on training for senior students like repairing steel and wooden furniture, painting and glass blowing.
