September 2011: The making of a Model Herb Garden
With 5640 species of flora, Tamil Nadu ranks first among all the States in the country in angiosperm (flowering plant) diversity. Out of these 1559 species are medicinal plants.
To develop ethno-botanical knowledge of medicinal plants and their uses in medicine and other fields, the students are developing a model herb garden to showcase the native medicinal plants. They have prepared the soil bed using organic farming methods and planted around 50 native medicinal plants.
To conserve space the students are using a concept called square foot gardening where the layout have been designed like a chess board grid of one square foot each and plants have placed in each grid and numbered for identification.
