STUDENTS FROM OMEGA VISIT SIRAGU SCHOOL

In the north of Chennai is a truly remarkable school.  Founded by Dr V.Uma, it provides education for children from the streets and from very poor circumstances.  Omega is blessed to have made connections with this school, its dedicated staff and its bubbly children!
The first connection was established when Dr Uma decided to enter 3 of her most promising students for the IGCSE. Omega School has offered to give support to these 3 students. They have been given face to face lessons in English as Second Language, training and guidance on how to answer the question papers by EM, Chemistry, Physics and Maths teachers of the Omega School. They were also given guidance to prepare for their Coursework of Oral Assessment. In addition, Mr. Chanakya, the English Teacher of these students, was given guidance on how to provide the students with enough practice for the examinations.

Dr Uma invited Omega School students to come and see the Siragu school for themselves.  So a group of teachers accompanied Class 11 students on a day trip to Siragu, a day that proved to be inspiring and heart warming for all.  Our students were delighted by the happiness and enthusiasm of the children, and amazed at the depth and scope of their knowledge.   Some confidently discussed global warming with us, others demonstrated songs and dancing.   Such was the ease and warmth of the interactions of both groups of students, that Omega students spontaneously began serving the children who sat patiently waiting for their lunch.   Their joy was clearly visible – and so was the pleasure of the little ones!

We departed from Siragu with our hearts opened in wonder and appreciation for these children, their teachers, and the new life that is now possible for these families.

Back at Kolapakkam, the students set about making learning resources for Siragu – charts and cards with alphabets, numbers, words and pictures.   They also organised a collection of clothes, school bags, stationery and books to donate.

*  This collection for the Siragu community is ongoing, so if any Omega parents and friends have such items in good condition, please bring them to school, for the attention of the Ministry of Service of the Student Council.
