WHAT'S NEW AT OMEGA ?

LMOIS - New Initiatives, 2011.

Over the past six months, the school has embarked on a number of new initiatives to bring it closer to the goal of excellence that has been set for it by its founder Shri P. Rajagopalachari.
The initiatives are in two broad areas, one related to operational efficiency and the other related to student welfare.

The initiatives relating to operational efficiency are as follows:

  • Consequent to Mrs. Nirmala's relinquishing the position of CBSE Principal, Dr. Bhavanishankar has been appointed to the position, and a formal intimation sent to CBSE.
  • In turn, Dr. Bhavanishankar has redefined the organisational structure of the academics to better manage the school, keeping in mind the ever growing numbers of students and staff.
  • The school will now have a Head each for the IGCSE stream, the KG section, Primary school, Middle school and Senior School.
  • As of June, the school has more than 3200 students, with more than 180 teachers, and around the same number of other staff.

  • We now have a Book Store on campus, where students can buy everything they need, from uniform cloth material to books and stationery items.

The student welfare initiatives are as below:

  • We have contracted with IDiscoveri, for their XSEED program. This will provide the school with complete teaching and learning programs for classes from Kindergarden to Class 3, for both CBSE and IGCSE streams. We expect that this will establish a good learning benchmark for the students, while providing teachers with a platform from which to create a meaningful syllabus for the future.
  • We have contracted with Edusports for a similar program for sports and games education for classes from KG to III. This program will enable the students to learn flexibility, hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, and other motor skills. We expect that such honing of their physical capabilities will in turn enhance their learning abilities and self confidence.
  • All students and staff will now be provided with smart cards, which will have a computer chip embedded in them. The card will permit the following operations:

Attendance monitoring, with card readers being placed at all important locations, including all classrooms.
The card will also function as a debit card. Card holders can charge their card by making a payment at the cash counter at the school. Once the card has been charged, the holder can make purchases from the Book Store or the Canteen, and the amount of purchase will automatically be debited to the card and an SMS will be sent to the parent (in the case of students).
The card will also double as a library card for taking books from the library.

  • We have made considerable investments in the library this year, as follows:

The space available for the library has almost doubled, with a large reading area being added to the existing space.
The library now has more than 12000 volumes, and is growing day by day.
The books have been bar coded, and a new library management system, based on open source Koha software and it's own server, is in place.

  • The campus walkways are being covered with shade netting to give students some shade on their way to and from their classrooms.

  • The entire perimeter of the campus is now lit at night with solar powered lamps, as are all the corridors and toilet blocks.

  • With the growing numbers of students and staff, the school has opened a new Health Room situated in the middle of the campus and adjacent to the KG block. It is spacious and well equipped to take care of the day scholars. The previously existing Health Room will continue to serve all the boarders.

  • Omega's interest in the fine arts has taken shape in an Art Laboratory that gives students an excellent space to explore new artistic techniques, inspired by the works of great painters.

  • A new and vibrant play area with slides and ladders invites children to enjoy some exercise during recess.
